4thGordons Posted 17 November , 2007 Share Posted 17 November , 2007 Great! Thanks again. Is there a maker on the shoe? I have a much later pair of brogues made in Rushden (Northants) where I grew up. On the off chance does anyone know of a source of repro. spats - I would like one to complete a early war Gordon's display. I have been unlucky so far. Thanks for posting the images, Chris
rgalley Posted 21 November , 2007 Share Posted 21 November , 2007 Paul, Please excuse this stupid question. Were boots worn under spats, or just shoes? I would imagine boots would present a few problems worn in such a way, but stranger things ...? Richard
rgalley Posted 21 November , 2007 Share Posted 21 November , 2007 Richard, Unlikely but not impossible. The spats had to be fitted to the shoe ie the leather strap was adjusted and then cut to fit. It would probably be a tight fit over ankle boots. There is only one thing I'm sure of if, it could be done someone, somewhere, would have done it! I have an outrageous photo of a Scottish soldier wearing SD trousers, with get this, hosetops and spats OVER the trousers. I will dig it out and post it just to prove if it can be done..... Regards Tocemma Thanks Tocemma. I look forward to seeing the photo. I've seen something similar done by a modern day Pakistani Army Pipe Band! Hi All, Just to complete this item: spats, hose-tops, garter-flashes, and trousers was a perfectly acceptable form of dress for the Highland Cyclist Battalion.
