nhclark Posted 13 November , 2007 Share Posted 13 November , 2007 I assume that with the ebb and flow of the war on the Western Front, G.H.Q. may have been located in a number of different places over time. Is there any material available on where these places were at various stages of the war? Noel
Chris_Baker Posted 13 November , 2007 Share Posted 13 November , 2007 For most of the war it was at Montreuil-sur-Mer and before that St Omer. It moved a few times during the move up to and the retreat from Mons in August-September 1914. There were at various stages Advanced HQs and those mysterious places that John French seemed to disappear to at critical moments!
Ron Clifton Posted 13 November , 2007 Share Posted 13 November , 2007 GHQ arrived at St Omer on 13 October 1914, after being in several places for one to ten days as Chris mentions. Moved to Montreuil 30 March 1916 (Ecole Militaire) and stayed there for the rest of the war. An Advanced GHQ was sometimes set up close to the HQ of the relevant Army when major operations were in progress (at Beauquesne during the Battles of the Somme 1916, and at Blendecques during Third Ypres in 1917). Haig also made use of a specially equipped GHQ railway train in 1918, especially during the Hundred Days in 1918. Ron
