The Times Archive

Hi all, I am having trouble finding few bits on the Archive. William Creed KIA Wilts. How do you actually search archive site effectively. Any tips would be most welcome.

Thanks, Donnie

The search engine is compromised by the exceptional small type on the casualty lists.

With a date of death, it's not too bad. Ok, it's not very good at all....

I searched for his number 11179 .

He is in the Killed list dated 24-8-1915 with 3 other 5th Wilts men.

Steve.

What have you tried? If you've just tried "William Creed", try

W. [initials] Creed

Wm. Creed

Creed, [regiment]

etc.

and you can narrow the search dates to 1914-1918 (or just to 1917, or whatever)

The OCR is not entirely accurate, so you might also try William *G*reed, etc.

I am still having touble finding any reference to my GreatGrandad Peter Daniel Desbrow MC, he was RGA. He wounded late 1915 and he won the MC so shouldnt he appear somewhere? I have tried every combination possible.

Yeh, Hi mate. i did find all that relates to his service from the London Gazette, But its the wounded and anything really from the "The Times" archive that i need. Can't seem to find anything. The Times archive is worse than the damn LG

Thanks, Donnie

Yep!

It's really the small type that does it...

All I can suggest is that you go through day by day and tick "people" and look through all the "deaths" type articles. After a while you get an eye for telling which are miltary ones and which are the civilian ones. A delay of about 7 days was standard for the reporting of officer woundings.

I'm not Steve, but many of us access the archive by our local library membership; log on to the library website, enter our library number and bring it up. I've just glanced at the Surrey libraries website, but could see no reference to it being available in your neck of the woods.

Ralph: I don't know how your local authority libraries are organised, ie whether Rochdale has its own library service or is part of the Lancashire one. But a Google leads to an enigmatic reference that in Lancashire it's only available by subscription:

That's useful - and saves me fielding more individual requests! I suspect that, as with Reading, one has to enrol with the library and prove local residency to obtain log-in details to the archive.

To Pals in general: if your library hasn't got the archive, ask them why not. It really is an invaluable research tool up to 1985. Had it been available in my library nine years ago I would have saved a lot of time spent wading through quarterly printed indices for likely articles, putting the microfilm in the reader (only to find it had been rewound incorrectly and was upside down or back to front, or both), manually winding for a likely article (that more often than not was right at the end of the month - and the reel), and taking notes on one's knees (if the neighbouring desk was being used).

Steve,

You can add Poole Libraries to your list. For some in Dorset this may be a useful way in to the Times Archive. However, I have had no luck looking for 2nd Lt. E E Thompson, RGA, died 16/10/18 - apart from finding him in a list of officers died. I was hoping for an article. As for 2nd Lt Cecil Clarke Cole, RGA died 13/1017 - nothing!

Best wishes,

David

Section X (Portsmouth) of the National Roll of the Great War has the following:

"DESBROW, P. D., Captain, R.G.A.

He joined the army in 1896 but when war broke out in August 1914, served for a time at home, and in 1915 was drafted to France.

After a month overseas he was sent home for special work until 1918, when he returned to France, and played a distinguished part in the Retreat and Advance. In 1920 he was still in the Army and holds the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service, Victory, and Long Service and Good Conduct Medals. 130, Newcomen Road, Stamshaw, Portsmouth."
