Remembered Today:

Anyone near Chatham?

I have found the following man from my village who is not on the local war memorial:

Name: SARGENT, SILAS

Initials: S

Nationality: United Kingdom

Rank: Sapper

Regiment/Service: Royal Engineers

Unit Text: M Depot Coy.

Date of Death: 03/06/1915

Service No: 102052

Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead

Grave/Memorial Reference: 1321.

Cemetery: FORT PITT MILITARY CEMETERY

It turns out that the day before his departure to France he was found in NCO's latrines of St Mary's Barracks in a sitting posture with his back to the door, with his throat cut and blood unsurprisingly gushing from the wound. A razor was found IN IT's CASE to the right of Sargent, who was a miner and barber in his home village.

The coroner ruled that it was suicide probably brought about due to the 'restrictions of service life' and that the razor was back in the case as a barber to do so would be second nature.....

If any pal is in the area I'd really appreciate a photo of Silas's grave.

Many thanks

Jon

Jon,

what an interesting story. North Kent used to be my neck of the woods, but not any more. I know there are a few Pals from the Medway Towns, I'm sure one wll oblige for you

I have this photo from a couple of years ago - unfortunately a small part of the inscription is obscured by a flower. If you want the pic email me your address via Memebrs.

Poor sod ! R.I.P Silas...

Jon,

If Jonathan's photo isn't what you seek (although I suspect it is) then please send me a message and I shall take another photo this coming weekend (I'm normally to be found in glorious Medway most weekends).

Hi Jonathan hope you are well?
