scottiow Posted 14 November , 2006 Share Posted 14 November , 2006 Can anyone tell me what "Paid war Gratuity H.M.S Columbine list" means. It is stamped on my great-grandfathers service record. I know Columbine was the depot ship to the HMS Valkyrie which my great-grandfather served on. He served on the Vehement and Valkyrie 1917-1919. He was onbaord when the Vehement was mined. Am i right in thinking that is war gratuity is a sort of pension Thanks for any help scott
joseph Posted 14 November , 2006 Share Posted 14 November , 2006 Scott, War service qualifying for Gratuity to be service actually rendered within the period 2nd August, 1914, and the 1st August, 1919 For an Able Seaman this was granted at 5 pounds for the first years service and 10/- for each month served afterwards up to a maximum of 48 months. The full amount at todays value about 5,000 pounds. Regards Charles

per ardua per mare per terram Posted 26 November , 2006 Share Posted 26 November , 2006 Some contemporary price comparisons for 1921-30 drawn from Dr Harold Priestley, 'the what it cost the day before yesterday book,' (Kenneth Mason, Havant, 1979). Pint of beer 6d (2 1/2p); so he could get 20 pints for 10 shillings. Cigarettes 20 for 1s (5p); 200 for 10 shillings. Oak parquet flooring 5s/6d (27 1/2p) per square yard; not quite 2 square yards/metres for 10 shillings. Ton of coal 30s (£1.50); 3 months gratuity. Gents armchair £4/10s (£4.50); 10 shillings short of the year bonus. 10 day Mediterranean cruise £21; the year gratuity + 22 months.
