Many forum questions relate specifically to the Royal Artillery. With this in mind I have started this thread to consolidate information from other threads relating to the TF but also the New Army Batteries. In order to compile a reasonably comprehensive file of battery numbering I would ask any contributors not to post directly on the forum but to send any Battery or Ammunition Column number ranges direct to me in order to make one logical list in a single posting. I have started by transferring information supplied by Dick Flory which covers most of the TF numbers. Please send any New Army numbering so that we can see how it all fits together. Questions requiring answers please to anyone that can help. Trying to find out info on 81st siege battery RGA and if part of a larger grouping; particularly on the 19/10/1917. Just what exactly was a siege battery ,ie how many men needed to man whatever type of guns, if horses used ect. Were they fixed guns and so on. Also difference between RGA and RFA would broaden my knowledge base. G uncle P. Does this mean his number is a post August 1914 regular army number? Also would there be a 64278 RFA and RHA or was this number the only 64278 for all RA? The numbers relate to the ranges given for a particular battery group when renumbered. It does not mean your particular man was with this battery after renumbering, it indicates a possible initial battery circa 1914/16. Comments, suggestions,more information appreciated. Also Back in 1990 I worked out of this old building for several months. We used it for Royal Mail parcels before we lost the work to Parcelfarce. Seeing the vans lined up inside made be wonder what it was like in the old days with the guns and limbers in there. Now the building has gone and flats with their parking area are there instead. I am researching my Great Grandfathers military history his name was Gnr Michael Holden, SN 296131 / 6927 of the 152 (Hackney) Heavy Battery RGA. I have stumbled across your correspondence and wondering where you got the range of SN from, because they do not correlate with the Roll of Indivdual Medal at National Archives Q which my father has gathered during recent research. For example, there are numbers missing and numbers listed in other batterys. Hopefully you can understand that this has thrown my research into some confusion. The first entry I have for the 152 is SN 296006, can you please clarify where you found your information so I can confirm the exact numbers of the Officers and Men that comprised the 152nd Battery. I have recently contacted the Artillery Museum in Woolwich and they cannot explain how your numbers have been derived. During my research I have discovered a whole host of information on the 152nd (Hackney) and would be more that willing to share that information to parties interested. ororkep Posted 3 April , 2007 Share Posted 3 April , 2007 Welcome Karen, No one knows the exact number that were in 152 HB and possibly never will. One can only take an informed educated guess based on experience of other more fully recorded batteries. The paltry 2 months official diary offers up less than 20 names mostly Officers. It shows a snapshot in time total compliment of 203 in Apr 1916 but this is no where near the sum total of those that would have served in 152 HB during the whole course of the war. The allocations say a section from 182 HB joined in Oct 1916. this will be another 80 odd names to add. Reading the 8 of the 9 HAG diaries they were part of will possibly give another 100 if you are very lucky, (one is missing completely), this might still leave you short of anything up to another 100 names that were part of the battery before it disbanded in 1919. You may find a large proportion by trawling through the 6 Silver War badge medal rolls (a great source) and the 30 plus British and Victory RGA rolls, but you will never get all of them as a high percentage are listed as ‘Base Details’ or simply ‘RGA’, so can be impossible to associate with your battery of interest, others will confuse you by showung a different battery mentioned entirely. A personal diary can prove a godsend for names, equally the Lon Gaz will add to your total and the Monthly returns tell you how many men to expect in any given period. Then Soldiers Died and CWGC and national Roll of honours will give you and confirm about 25% for the Batteries deaths and those that were injured. based on an average HB. When you have anything between 350 to 480 names of which 40 could be Officers entered in a database with all the corresponding service numbers, and sort them by number rather than alphabetical you will magically find the numbering is correct for the largest percentage of them. Sort also by the B&V references on the MIC and you will see other patterns appearing, likewise for the SWB’s, all the result of a huge undertaking in time and effort initiated by R Flory and expanded on by Kondoa for which they must both be congratulated. Of course there are gaps as gunners moved on through promotion or left because of injury and of course death. Many you will never find and have yet to find; replacements, transfers, attachments and those seconded will have different numbers that buck the trend. Some will have two and three numbers that make searching even harder or appear under their previous numbers; you can have a MIC name and number to 152 HB and the B&V mans same number to a completely different battery, but as a good starting point the base reference is roughly correct for the innitial core compliment that first made up the battery. The closest I have personally seen to yours is 155 HB, which is in the RGA roll WO329/308 and has well over 250 names of 155 gunners in it, the vast majority in one block. this is a great start to anyone interested in researching this battery but few bother to go beyond the MIC cards to the actual rolls. Mountain batteries are others I have seen in a similay sequence and 139 HB is another good example and we havent even started on the Am Col yet. I note your ancestor falls in the middle of the sequence. Try entering 152nd Heavy in the online MIC database and see what come up in relation to his other number. Chance, i dont think so there is obviously a system behind it and the more members post their own findings the more information becomes available to make the results more accurate. KONDOA Posted 4 April , 2007 Author Share Posted 4 April , 2007 Hi Karen, These number ranges are empirical in that they have been worked out from numerous sources to give a rough correlation for each TF association raised New Army Battery. The work continues. I would agree that 152 battery may well start at 006, and there will be gaps as not all numbers in a range were allocated . Some men left before renumbering etc etc. Therefore the number ranges I have identified need using with caution in that other complementary information is required. The numbers are only relevant to those men renumbered from the old TF type numbering where a TF primary number exists and thus would tend to be local men to the point of enlistment and unit raising. From this number series one can deduce the majority of the men who served in a particular battery in 1917 ish, it is a snapshot of the battery which can be very useful. it is by no means the complete picture though. In the medal rolls you may well see references to other units but often these are the unit previously served with and rank upon entering theatre of war. Hope this helps. Roop PS . I wondered since your last posting whether you had uncovered any more information about this battery and where it was sent during WWI? Any information would be appreciated. You obviously have something that puts Gunner Hirst in the 152 battery but perhaps you can confirm that it's the Heavy Battery rather than the Siege. Your g. grandfathers number is the second this Christmas that falls in the same batch who enlisted at the same time. It would indicate someone who signed "on the dotted line" on the 16 June 1916 at the Citadel, Plymouth, having arrived up to a week or so earlier. There are quite a group of men who were mobilised from the Edinburgh and Leith areas and perhaps you can confirm whether he did also. Like the other gunner most of the men went onto 15 Coy, Carrick Fergus, and eventually joined either 198 HB or 199 HB. Your GGF did not serve with 152 Battery. Unfortunately you have made the common mistake the other new member made in that the 152 B you read on the medal card and interpreted as 152 Battery, is the reference to the British and Victory Medal Roll at the NA. It will be followed by page 5243. However I can tell you that in this case the page will confirm he served with 324 Siege Battery RGA, and you should therefore start a complete new thread for information on that Battery.
