Knowing little about the air war, I wonder if anyone has any information about this former officer of RFA who, after becoming a flyer, was KIA on 6 July 1917.

His CWGC entry is:

Name: DEVENISH, GEORGE WESTON

Initials: G W

Nationality: United Kingdom

Rank: Lieutenant

Regiment: Royal Flying Corps

Unit Text: 35th Sqdn.

Secondary Regiment: Royal Field Artillery

Secondary Unit Text: and

Date of Death: 06/06/1917

Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead

Cemetery: ARRAS FLYING SERVICES MEMORIAL

Although it is the name "DEVENISH D W" which appears on a local war memorial, I believe this is the man as a headstone in a nearby cemetery bears an inscription to him.

Any information would be much appreciated,

Chris.

I am aware of a D H Devenish who was KIA in 1916 with the Swansea Bn.

Chris,

I believe a Memorial volume was published to him probably by his family, but I'm afraid I have no other details,

Steve, Bernard and Bob,

Thank you for your information, particularly the gazette entries which are difficult to find at the best of times.

Bernard,

I did try all sorts of combinations of "DEVENISH" service men. My conclusions were based on the fact that first initial "D" and "G" are not too apart phonetically, and no other man I could find had any other kind of link to the area, whereas the inscription on a family grave for G.W.Devenish lies just half a mile from the memorial.

Other contributions still welcome.

Regards,

Chris.

Lt G W Devenish and Lt Harold Gordon Knight Cotterill (aged 24, from Hanley, Staffordshire, and formerly Royal Field Artillery) of No 35 Sqn RFC were flying Armstrong Whitworth FK 8 A2693 on an artillery observation mission when they were killed in action on 6 June 1917. After leaving No 35 Sqn's aerodrome at Mons-en-Chaussée at 1030, A2693 was shot down near Premont around 1100.

A victory was credited to Vizefeldwebel Fritz Krebs of Jasta 6; it was the third of his eventual eight before he was killed in combat with aircraft from Nos 1 and 56 Sqns RFC on 16 July 1917.

I hope this helps.
