trajan Posted 6 June , 2016 Share Posted 6 June , 2016 Hi everyone, One of two nice finds at the Antika Pazar yesterday was a P.1888, EFD 1/'02, pommel marked '9 MAN / 711'. I attach a photograph of that marking and will do other photographs when I can. It came with a cut-down Turkish M.1887/1890 scabbard, which it does not quite fit, but the scabbard is also interesting as it is longer than is necessary for a shortened M.1887/1890 bayonet - I'll post that elsewhere. Oh, and there is no under the tang mark on this one like those discussed at: http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=239286&page=1entry2401359 That aside, this 9th Manchester were, I gather, the "Ashton Territorials", who were at Gallipoli... Anyway, it makes a nice pendant to my other Manchester unit- marked P.1888, this one for the 7th Manchester, also at Gallipoli... - see: http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=210940&hl=manchester

jscott Posted 6 June , 2016 Share Posted 6 June , 2016 Fantastic find Trajan. I saw the photo before I read the text and I immediately suspected that you'd found a brother to your P88 7th Manchester bayonet. I've not seen any Manchester unit marked P88's other than those that you've posted so they aren't common, that's for sure. P88s marked to Territorial units are amongst my favourite bayonets, and this is a great example. The Gallipoli connection is icing on the cake. Oh, and what was the other find? trajan Posted 6 June , 2016 Author Share Posted 6 June , 2016 Thanks so much for the compliments! Well, yes, I am mightily pleased with it... The other stuff on the table (a new dealer) was also good, and included a 1920 dated Lithgow P.1907 - but I had to stop looking at the others after seeing this one and my other nice find, which I'll show shortly. So here is the P.1888 with its modified Turkish M.1890 scabbard, plus ricasso markings. It is one of the faintest ER marks I have seen - I am used to these on VR ones. It is a single EFD inspector mark, crown / 98 / E. The blade spine markings are there, but not easy to read... Julian
trajan Posted 15 June , 2016 Author Share Posted 15 June , 2016 And as luck would have it I have just managed to get hold of a 1915 Trio to a member of the 9th Manchester Regiment, so already having their cap badge, possibilities for a display there!
