ph0ebus Posted 16 June , 2015 Share Posted 16 June , 2015 Hi all, Yesterday was quite a productive day, as I identified another relation who served in the Great War but who perished in the Shoah. Friedrich Adler was born 29 April 1878 in Laupheim. Apparently he was in an Infantry unit, which I can surmise based on his uniform in this photo I found of him: The photo caption gives his rank as Offiziersstellvertreter, and one can clearly see he has been awarded the EKII. The issue I am having is that I cannot seem to find any entry in the verlustlisten for him, certainly not one with Laupheim as the location, and as such I am having a terrible time determining what unit he was attached to. I am not sure if his uniform gives any further suggestions or if folks might have better luck with the VLs but any advice would be welcome. Sadly, during WWII Friedrich was deported to Auschwitz and was murdered there. Thanks, -Daniel

ph0ebus Posted 22 June , 2015 Author Share Posted 22 June , 2015 What a sad finish for a gallant soldier! Glad he's remembered. Thanks...indeed he had quite a life and such a tragic end. I am wondreing if this *might* be him? http://des.genealogy.net/search/show/2768222 He was in Nürnberg right before the war, from what biographical details I can find... trajan Posted 22 June , 2015 Share Posted 22 June , 2015 Did you know there is a school named after him? See: http://www.realschule-laupheim.de/joomla/ German Wiki: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friedrich_Adler_(K%C3%BCnstler)has quite a bit and states that: " Diese (his teaching certificate) setzte er dann von 1907–1933 an der Kunstgewerbeschule in Hamburg fort. Parallel leitete er von 1910–1913 vier Meisterkurse am damaligen Bayerischen Gewerbemuseum in Nürnberg. Seine Hamburger Tätigkeit wurde von 1914–1918 durch den Kriegsdienst als Offiziers-Stellvertreter im Ersten Weltkrieg unterbrochen. 1918 an die Kunstgewerbeschule Hamburg zurückgekehrt, wurde er dort 1927 zum Professor ernannt. I would guess that he was made Offiziers-Stellvertreter on account of his age? No clear clue as to his unit, as those piped cuffs cover a wide range... trajan Posted 22 June , 2015 Share Posted 22 June , 2015 Daniel, Have you seen this web site? - http://www.stolpersteine-hamburg.de/index.php?MAIN_ID=7&BIO_ID=2669 It states that: "Während des Ersten Weltkrieges diente Friedrich Adler als Unteroffizier. Später stieg er zum Feldwebel und zum Offizierstellvertreter auf.", and so detailed a comment indicates that there should be a more detailed record of his military service somewhere... EDIT: A possible source for the military service is given here: http://www.linkfang.de/wiki/Friedrich_Adler_(K%C3%BCnstler) - that is to say the biography written by Ina Lorenz: on Adler, Friedrich. In: Hamburgische Biografie, Band 1, Christians, Hamburg 2001, ISBN 3-7672-1364-8, S. 16–17. SECOND EDIT: There seems to be quite a bit on him! See, e.g., http://www.steinheim-institut.de/cgi-bin/epidat?lang=de&function=Inf&sel=lau#vier This notes the following 'Ausgewählte Literatur' which could have the information re: unit and service: Ernst Schäll: "Friedrich Adler (1878-1942).
