geraint Posted 16 November , 2014 Share Posted 16 November , 2014 I sat riveted till the end. Best programme of the centennial by a very long neck. And yes - very, very well done Peter Barton.
Dust Jacket Collector Posted 16 November , 2014 Share Posted 16 November , 2014 Absolutely superb. Stallworthy in particular gave a very balanced view. Now, how do I get my hands on that copy of 'Nothing of Importance' inscribed by Sassoon to Owen!!
Seadog Posted 16 November , 2014 Share Posted 16 November , 2014 My joint top with Paxmans effort and CH4 "Forgotten soldiers of WW1" just a bit surprised that Wilfred Owens the "The Sentry" was not featured Norman
jonrb Posted 16 November , 2014 Share Posted 16 November , 2014 A great programme, well put together and a great job by Peter Barton. Probably the best programme of the centennial so far, let's hope that over the next few years there will be more programmes of this quality. bts1970 Posted 16 November , 2014 Share Posted 16 November , 2014 In my humble opinion by far the best offering to date. Not a celebrity to be seen, fantastic thought provoking programme. I like Peter Barton's input, he genuinely comes across as being emotionally tied to every event. For those with limited interest in War Poets this programme may surprise you. shaner13 Posted 16 November , 2014 Share Posted 16 November , 2014 Fantastic programme,Peter Barton does a great job.I'm presuming this was meant to be three episodes. I'm hoping the BBC will release this to DVD. It restores my faith a little in the BBC when they produce a gem like this.

SteveMarsdin Posted 16 November , 2014 Share Posted 16 November , 2014 It was excellent, perhaps down to the fact that Peter produced it as well as been the front-man

J Banning Posted 16 November , 2014 Share Posted 16 November , 2014 Fantastic programme,Peter Barton does a great job.I'm presuming this was meant to be three episodes. I'm hoping the BBC will release this to DVD. It restores my faith a little in the BBC when they produce a gem like this. On behalf of all involved many thanks for the kind comments. It was never planned to be three episodes and was organised like that as a way of delineating between the before battle section, 1 July and summer 1916 and the Junger/Tolkien section for later parts of the battle. If interested I have put some photos of the locations and filming in June and October 2013 on my website: http://jeremybanning.co.uk/gallery/?album=1&gallery=6 BBC iPlayer link here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b04pw01r/war-of-words-soldierpoets-of-the-somme Is there any chance the original thread starter or a mod can amend the title to 'War of Words Soldier Poets of the Somme? Chris_B Posted 16 November , 2014 Share Posted 16 November , 2014 Absolutely superb. Stallworthy in particular gave a very balanced view. Now, how do I get my hands on that copy of 'Nothing of Importance' inscribed by Sassoon to Owen!! Can be found here, read online or download https://archive.org/stream/nothingimportan00adamgoog#page/n3/mode/2up No inscription but better than nothing ... This programme shows just what can be done ... highly recommended. Congrats to Peter Barton, Jeremy Banning et al. Despite having Sassoon and Owen on the bookshelf for decades now, I've tended to mistrust seeing the Great War through the eyes of poets. This has made me think again, and determined to read more ... A few random links: http://www.poetrybyheart.org.uk/poems/in-parenthesis-leave-it-under-the-oak/ http://war-poets.blogspot.co.uk/2010/08/david-jones-in-parenthesis.html http://www.poetryfoundation.org/bio/david-jones Plus maybe it's time I re-read "Old Soldiers never die .." PS Last week's culture show http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b04pd0vt/the-culture-show-the-great-war-an-elegy-a-culture-show-special was well worth watching too. Fattyowls Posted 17 November , 2014 Share Posted 17 November , 2014 I read some of the earlier comments before watching this on the BBC I-player. I thought this had better be good and it was. In fact it was superb; the best thing that I have ever seen on the Somme. It's a contender for the best thing I have ever seen on the Great War. The photography and the annotation of the landscape were really groundbreaking and I was struck the way that Peter Barton can still speak from the heart despite being so familiar with those fields. Epic. Pete.

Thank you if so sJ Having made a very minor contribution to the program ( sourcing a dust jacket), the BBC have promised to send me a copy of it on dvd. I'll let you know if it ever arrives should you still need it.

petestarling Posted 17 November , 2014 Share Posted 17 November , 2014 I have to agree with all the comments above. A very good production and just what you would expect from Peter Barton. The only problem now is I have had to add more locations to my list of places to visit when I next go to France. Pete
