I enjoyed the programme very much. Whoever drew the maps couldn't spell 'Thiepval' and none of the historical advisers seems to have spotted it but that was my only niggle. The programme was very well written and was a good attempt at getting an insight into Gurney's complex mind. High quality stuff.

I am in Oxford for OU Spring school on War Poets. Just heard Philip Lancaster give a fascinating talk on Gurney....certainly seems that Ivor Gurney 's profile is on the rise as it were.

Apparently only about a third of Gurney's poems have been published. Philip Lancaster and Professor Tim Kendall are working on a three volume anthology of all Gurney's poems and these should be appearing in the next few years.

A catalogue of Gurney manuscripts can be found at

Finally Ivor Gurney will be BBC Radio 3's Composer of the Week 30th June 2014- 4th July 2014.

A very interesting programme. I was surprised to hear the Ivor chose to go to Bangour. I have never heard of a soldier choosing where he was to be treated. One small niggle, the presenter pronounced Bangour ar Bangor, which must have confused some people.

Alf McM

BBC Music magazine June 2014 has free CD with first time performance of Gurney's 'Gloucestershire Rhapsody' .

Discussion has been started here

Edit : Just have to add link to Philip Lancaster's 'Gurney ' blog. Looks like said piece was in fact performed at a concert in 2010 for the first time. The CD is the first live recording.
