msdt Posted 14 October , 2013 Share Posted 14 October , 2013 Hi,I recently purchased a 1907 bayonet marked to the North Staffordshire regiment. When I got home I realised that the unit mark did not conform to the standard armourers' instructions, viz N. STF., mine being N STAF. As there are 33 and 38 dates on the blade, could these be post WWI marks? The Chapman bayonet is dated 5 16 (I think, strange dies), and also has a cancelled South African mark.Regards,Tony
shippingsteel Posted 14 October , 2013 Share Posted 14 October , 2013 It does look to be an interwar used bayonet. Those numbers on the ricasso are reissue dates, so well used. Also seen SAF service along the way. Cheers, S>S
collectorsguide Posted 15 October , 2013 Share Posted 15 October , 2013 I have 2 bayonets as follows..... 5. S.STAF. 411.....MADE 5.18 WILKINSON PALL MALL INSPECTED 1927 AND 1935 1. S. STF. 75......MADE 3.15 SANDERSON NO RE-INSPECTION MARKS. LOOKS LIKE STAF. IS AN INTERWAR STAMPING WHILE STF IS WW1. BEST W, HOWARD
msdt Posted 15 October , 2013 Author Share Posted 15 October , 2013 Thanks guys. When I first got it home I wondered if the unit mark was a fake! But as the SA mark was correctly cancelled and also the scabbard throat is stamped 272 matching the pommel, I thought that was too much to be faked. The scabbard is dated 17, so unlikely to be the original one. So following Howard's similar example above, I'd say the bayonet was originally with the South Africans, then went to the North Staffordshire's in the 30's when it and the scabbard were unit stamped. msdt Posted 21 October , 2013 Author Share Posted 21 October , 2013 Was told on Sunday that there was a new set of armourers' instructions issued between the wars that changed the unit codes. Does anyone know more on this? Tony

msdt Posted 22 October , 2013 Author Share Posted 22 October , 2013 Thanks for the info Howard. Nice to have a P13 unit marked Tony, the implication being that it is a WW1 mark as they wouldn't have had P14 rifles after WW1 surely (unless the snipers had bayonets!).
