Remembered Today:

The Spur trade badge in RFA.

Can anyone please help me about the horse men of the artillery, please?

I have been looking at two photographs (in a local archive, so I can't post them) of groups of soldiers who are certainly artillery (I suspect RFA) at Biscot camp, or nearby.

I suspect that they are "horse related" artillery men rather than gunners. I think that one picture is taken outside a local (possibly commandeered) stables or smithy. (Though it might be the back yard of a pub.) The other is in front of a bell tent.

In one picture one man is clearly a farrier.

In the other one of the men is wearing the spur (point up) badge above a single chevron (bombardier).

I knew that this was the badge of a Rough Rider, but I see that it was also the badge of a Riding Instructor and a Remount Trainer.

Would all these have been possibilities in the RFA?

Also how did a man qualify as a Rough Rider?

Roger.
