Sandie Hayes Posted 8 April , 2013 Share Posted 8 April , 2013 Gunner 114467 F.W. Hitchmough, 255th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery was 37 years old when he enlisted on 16th August 1916. A newsagent and confectioner from Warrington, Frederick was married with 3 children, the youngest was just 2 when Frederick died. He and his wife, Elizabeth, had married in 1906. He first went overseas on 18th January 1917 and died of wounds less than 3 months later. Frederick was returning from an attachment to the 2nd Army Artillery School when he was wounded, he died the same day. On 19th November 1917 Elizabeth Hitchmough was awarded a Widow's Pension of 26/3 for herself and her 3 children. Elizabeth never remarried and died in Warrington in June 1940. Frederick has 2 memorials, his CWGC gravestone in Soissons Communal Cemetery (where he is buried) and a family grave in Hill Cliffe Baptist Cemetery, Warrington.
