Tom W. Posted 15 December , 2012 Share Posted 15 December , 2012 I just found an amazing online resource for orders of battle, the Nafziger folder at the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center. http://www.cgsc.edu/CARL/nafziger/index.asp World War I begins at 914AHAA.pdf and ends at 918WHAA.pdf. Guest Posted 15 December , 2012 Share Posted 15 December , 2012 Excellent Tom. I knew about the site, but not the OOB's It also lists establishment of units. Have just downloaded them all using Firefox add-on Downthemall (had to manually select each pdf, but no problem) Mike
Guest Posted 15 December , 2012 Share Posted 15 December , 2012 I presume these OOB's/Establishment's are accurate? For example War Establishment British Cavalry Regiment 1 January 1914 Headquarters: 5 Officers 1 Warrant Officers 6 Staff Sergeants & Sergeants 3 Artificiers 27 Rank & File 31 Riding Horses 16 Draught Horses 3 Bicycles 1 Maltese cart for medical equipment 1 Water Cart 1 GS Wagon for raft equipment 1 GS Wagon for cooks 1 GS Wagon for baggage Headquarters, attached: 2 Officers 1 Artificiers 3 Rank & File 18 Riding Horses Machine Gun Section: 1 Officers 1 Staff Sergeants & Sergeants 25 Rank & File 20 Riding Horses 18 Draught Horses 4 GS wagons for 2 machine guns & equipment) 3 Squadrons: 18 Officers 30 Staff Sergeants & Sergeants 18 Artificiers 6 Trumpeters 402 Rank & File 459 Riding Horses 42 Draught Horses 6 Pack Horses 3 GS Wagons for SAA (1 per squadron) 3 GS Wagons for tools & signaling equipment (1 per squadron) 3 GS Wagons for baggage (1 per squadron) 12 Bicycles (4 per squadron) 1st Reinforcement 3 Storemen Sergeants 49 Storemen (rank & file) 48 riding horses Headquarters: 1 Lt. Tom W. Posted 15 December , 2012 Author Share Posted 15 December , 2012 I presume these OOB's/Establishment's are accurate? Don't know. The U.S. Army Combined Arms Center is generally pretty reliable. I'm going to assume they're accurate until someone proves them wrong.
Phil Evans Posted 15 December , 2012 Share Posted 15 December , 2012 The sources are at the bottom of the sections. The couple I picked showed the Official History and Arthur Conan Doyle. For example J.E.Edmonds, Editor Military Operations, France and Belgium, 1914, Official History, MacMillan, London. Doyle, Arthur Conan, The British Campaign in France and Flanders, 1914, George H. Dorna, Co., New York. Would Conan Doyle be considered a reliable source? I wouldn't consider either to be primary sources, but they may still be accurate. Ron Clifton Posted 16 December , 2012 Share Posted 16 December , 2012 Hello Mike and Phil The details given for a cavalry regiment are accurate for 1914 bar a couple of small points: - there were 16, not 18, draught horses with the m/g section; - there were five more bicycles, for the serjeant-cook, the armourer-serjreant and the three attached RAMC rank & file. From the way the info is presented (the summary figures, the order in which the actual jobs are listed) it is apparent that they were copied directly from War Establishments 1914. I would regard Conan Doyle as only a secondary source. Edmonds is generally reliable but only lists major units. In addition, his appendices reflect only "spot" positions at a defined date. A F Becke's Order of Battle of Divisions is more reliable day-on-day and is part of the Official History. Orders of Battle for France & Belgium, at roughly monthly intervals, are given in the files WO95/5467 to 5469 near the end of the War Diaries series but even here you can find occasional inconsistencies. War Establishments are given in files WO24/899 to 928. The first of these contains the WE for 1913 and 1914, and the others, the amendments (just over 2000) and sub-amendments (something like 6000) introduced during the war. Even these only give the authorised strengths, not the actual ones, and appear to be issued to confirm, rather than to initiate, changes. I have spent many happy (?) hours at Kew transcribing "headline" details of establishments, as well as the details of corps and army troops which Becke does not give. Ron Clifton Posted 16 December , 2012 Share Posted 16 December , 2012 1st Reinforcement 3 Storemen Sergeants 49 Storemen (rank & file) 48 riding horses This is inaccurate, too. The details left at the base were: 1 Subaltern, 2 Serjeants, 46 Rank & file as 1st reinforcements Serjeant Master-Tailor (a staff-serjeant) 3 Storemen (rank & file - one per squadron) There was also the orderly room serjeant, who was not included in the totals of the base detaoils, as he was included in the establishment of the AG's Office at the Base. aka GHQ 3rd Echelon. Guest Posted 16 December , 2012 Share Posted 16 December , 2012 Thanks Ron. They're not reliable then, so not much use. Better just to go with The Official History OOB's and these Establishment lists are ok as a rough guide? Mike
Ron Clifton Posted 17 December , 2012 Share Posted 17 December , 2012 Well, the numbers are right and the ranks are right, so I'd say (but on the basis of just the one example) they are probably reliable enough for most people. I'm an anorak's anorak who has been scritinising War Establishments in detail for about twenty years! I'm reminded of the caveat in the introduction to the Field Service Pocket Book that officers were not allowed to quote it as an authority (in promotion exams etc) even though everything in it was drawn from official sources. It's an old truism that you should do research from the best available sources, which for WW1 means official contemporary records and publications, but even these are not totally free from errors. Crunchy Posted 5 January , 2013 Share Posted 5 January , 2013 Tom and Mike, What an outstanding resource. Many thanks for posting the details. Mike, regarding your question on the accuracy of the OOB - I looked at "915DDAA Australian Troops Landed at ANZAC Gallipoli 25 April to 1 May 1915" and its is accurate (It also contains NZ, Indian and Ceylon troops) Looking at " 915AHAA Allied Assault on Salzi Beit and Chailak Deres Dardanelles 8 August 1915" Under Left Assaulting Column, 4th Australian Brigade the 16th (Western and South Australian) Battalion has been left off, so one would need to cross reference these OOB with other sources. Nonetheless, this is an excellent source to start with. Again, many thanks to both of you for posting the link and the details of what each link actually refers to. Cheers Chris

Skipman Posted 29 June , 2020 Share Posted 29 June , 2020 Regarding the missing file mentioned by Muerrisch 918BQAH War Establishment British Infantry Battalion 31 October 1918 have attached a copy I kept. Any others missing, give me a shout. Mike 918BQAH War Establishment British Infantry Battalion 31 October 1918.PDF
Muerrisch Posted 29 June , 2020 Share Posted 29 June , 2020 Thank you. The way that they are presented entails informed interpretation: in particular the copious footnotes of the original painted a full picture but were not transcribed. Fortunately I know enough to join most of the dots.
MaureenE Posted 29 June , 2020 Share Posted 29 June , 2020 There is a standard format for the links, the first on the list above is https://usacac.army.mil/sites/default/files/documents/carl/nafziger/914AHAB.pdf You can just copy and paste the relevant 7 numbers/letters from the list above, and replace them at the end of the URL, before .pdf There is also a 2012 "Finding Aid" on Archive.org, if you just want to browse through it online, without downloading it. However, all the URLs quoted are obsolete, and need to be replaced by a URL in the format given a few lines above. Cheers Maureen
Ron Clifton Posted 30 June , 2020 Share Posted 30 June , 2020 Thanks all. I have now been able to download all the relevant .pdfs, and also the list kindly provided by Mike which is a key to the .pdfs. That's the rest of my lockdown sorted! Skipman Posted 4 November , 2022 Share Posted 4 November , 2022 If you just google the code it will take you to the relevant pdf for example, if you want the War Establishment of British Machine Gun Company 3 April 1917 simply google 917BQAC and the first result will be the one you require.
