Dont know if this is the right board for this topic. If not then my apologies to the Mods. feel free to move it to an appropriate board.

Hi

Ive done a few searches on the forum for Commanding Officers of Battalion's who fought at the Battle of the Somme from the 2nd July to 26th November 1916. Doesnt seem to be a lot of information for the unknowledgeable like myself. So I thought it might be a good idea if we made one here.(Thats if its not already been done). I will start a list tonight for what I have and put it into some sort of legible form. Would be gratefull if any pals would like to add anything they have. I know that Bill (Bmac) has already done a list for the 1st day of the Battle, so lets complete the other 147 days if we can.

I know we can do it! B)

Where possible source should be described when submitting each CO. They can then be viewed by all the forum members who have an interest. If a conflicting source crops up it can be debated and a decision can be made wether to add him or not.

The list is prepared and I should be able to get it up and running over the weekend folks. A few technical hiccups to complete.

I certainly didnt know what I ws letting myself in for with this one!

Ok here goes

Battalion Commanding Officers on the Somme 2nd July - 26th November

The list below is in Regimental Alphabetical order.

Of course the list is nowhere complete ...or has even started I sometimes think, but it’s an exhaustive process and it’s most definitely work in progress.

Please feel free to email, PM or phone me if I’ve inadvertently made a mistake.

And of course the list needs to be finished if that’s possible. So again let me know what CO’s you want added.

Where possible details of dates served at the Battle of the Somme will be shown.

Dates of a casualty in the conflict will also be shown.

Sources and acknowledgments will be added at the end of the post.

Some of the Battalion CO’s who fought on the 1st day of the battle are listed here as the battle continued through to 26th November.

A more comprehensive list of Battalion CO’s who were in command on the 1st of July can be viewed by clicking on the link below, therefore credit must go to bmac’s post (Bill) for his work on the subject of the 1st July.

Bill’s work on the subject was my motivation for taking up this task. The post can be viewed here

Please treat the 'successors' with caution; the various histories are not always in agreement. It may be that the variations in the accounts results from whoever took over in the midst of battle, not necessarily being officially confirmed in that post later

These names certainly help. I'll try and update the list on a daily basis, failing that it will be updated every other day. Not enough hours in the day when you work for yourself and are trying to study history.

I will tread carefully with the successors. If a name is wrong and someone sees it they canlet me know via the source.

Thanks Michael

I think one needs a word of caution RIGHT NOW!

Commanding officers are of two types in a fluid combat area: 'appointed by due process', and 'temporarily succeeded to the command due to seniority on the spot".

The former will usually be Lt-Cols of the regiment, or Majors acting/ temporary Lt-Col. The latter could easily be captains, and fairly easily be not of the regiment.

If the temps. are to be included, these might only be one-day wonders.

Another offering:

I think no source other than the battalion war diary should be accepted: change of command, unless of the type where the CO is on the thunderbox, will almost always be logged. Unit histories are not universally reliable sources.

Before I offer 2nd RWF, need an answer to my initial point.

I have studied the 12 Warwicks' battalions on the Somme, including every war diary and a lot more. I cannot put together a comprehensive list.

I can contribute the following however....

"Battalion commanders were not immune from the risks of battle. Innes of the 1/8 had been killed on the first day. Major Albert N. Henderson was commanding 10th Battalion (Colonel Heath had been wounded on July 3) when he was killed by a shell burst on July 24. Colonel Franklin of the 1/6th was severely wounded on the first day and was awarded the DSO for leading a bombing party after being wounded. Colonel Jimmy Knox of 1/7th was wounded on July 3 but was able to return on November 24. The war service of Colonel Harding of 15th Battalion was ended by appendicitis at the beginning of September. He had had a narrow escape on July 25 when his groom, Frederick Doyle, was killed by a shell five miles behind the lines in an incident which threw him off his own horse. Other commanders moved upwards or sideways. Colonel Sladen of the 1/5th was promoted to command 143 Brigade whilst Colonel Wethered of the 1/8th left in September to command the Reserve Army Rest Camp. Colonel Collison of the 11th battalion was forced to go back to England for rest and was never able to return.

Personally, I am in favour of the inclusion of what Grumpy calls "one-day wonders"

When it counted, on the day, they did the job: if you do not mention them, then technically, the historical record is incomplete.

My philosophy is to provide as much information one can, and then let the reader/enquirer/whoever decide which bits he/she needs

Note that I've included a 1 day and a 3 day second in command men in my earlier posting. Poor Gwyther was killed 3 days after the kia of his predecessor.

Mc Lellan died on the same day as Carden. Technically 2 CO' s of the same battalion kia same day.

Still counts though.

Totally take your point GRUMPY. I agree that the "one day wonders" as you describe them should be added to the list of Battalion CO's on the Somme 2nd July - 26th Nov 1916. "One day" or temporary appointment I think these men qualify for an addition to this humble list.

On your point of War Diary's as the only source I disagree. If a forum member comes on here with a name that's already been researched by them from a reputable source ie Army List, Harts or John Buchan's History of the Royal Scots Fusiliers, Middlebrooks First Day or any of the other sources that appear at the bottom of this Post, then of course it should be included. Let the forum members decide if it's right or wrong and if proven wrong then it will be rectified.

*AMANDED POST* In some OH am I right in saying they were compiled from war diaries and Op reports. There was a topic on these mistakes in this forum. Even the WD's and OP reprts can throw up some errors. But your right GRUMY and John I think we need to tread carefully when adding a subject to the list. Source should be described when submitting the CO. They can then be viewed by all the forum members who have an interest. If a conflicting source crops up it can be debated and a decision can be made wether to add him or not.

Thank you

James

Anyway certainly hope you can make your addition to the list. If not then thats perfectly fine by me.

Entirely agree with Grumpy at post #11.

If this is to be meaningful, we need to know the what's what. Or do I mean the why's why?

I've explained my thoughts on the matter above John. If people want to add a Bttn. CO, if it's sourced properly, Why not?

Don't understand the second part of your question....."Or do I mean the why's why?"

If you want to know why I'm putting the list together then PM or email me.

*AMANDED POST* John I sent you a PM.

Thank you

James

All said and done, reply if you want a Battalion CO added folks "temp command" or "officialy installed".

Totally agree Michael. I know there's no definitine list out there, and probably never will be a complete list. Thats why this topic was started, to try and make some sort of searchable list for forum members like me who wants to know who was in command at certain time's during the battle.

I have taken note geraint.
