Remembered Today:

medal ribbon photos

Recommended Posts

What we do not seem to have on this Forum is a thread showing what decoration and campaign medal and LSGC, Coronation ribbons etc. actually look like on period photos.

Any attempt to photograph genuine ribbons using modern film will not do the trick, as I understand it.

The ones most likely to appear in the war on gallant breasts are, I suppose:

QSA KSA perhaps the various African campaigns, the IGS, China, LSGC, Coronation 1902, 1914 star [the BWM and VM were issued after the war]. Perhaps some 1920s photos might also help.

VC with and without the little bronze cross, DSO, MC, DCM, MM.

Some of these are 'easy' to recognise, probably the best is the MM, and the SA war pair.

I can contribute a few, please can others chip in?

Later today I shall add Frank Richards DCM, MM and 1914 star photo, and, I hope, a decent China or two.

Not the best image in the world, it's a scan of a photocopy.

My grandfather with his MC & trio with 1914 clasp and oakleaf for MiD. Uniform is Officer in charge of Westbury Fire Brigade (voluntary). I still have the medals and the epaulettes.

Notice what appears below the medals?? - looks like a lions head boss with whistle and chain as worn by 'Rifle Volunteers' - surely not a regulation Fire Brigade accoutrement??

Grumpy:

"an RQMS 1st RWF just before war: something, QSA KSA, something "

First something a DCM (colours look reversed in B/W photos)

Last something looks like a QV LSGCM?

Grumpy,

“Lt Col Cockburn RWF after the war: something to get my teeth into later”

This one's got me intrigued!

My guess:

1 = DSO

2= East & West Africa Medal 1887-1900

3 = QSA

4 = Africa General Service Medal 1902

5 = 14-15 Star

6 = BWM

7 = VM

8 = Legion d'honneur (France

Do I win any prizes..?!? 2 & 4 are really tricky... No idea about the medal on his right.

Produced to illustrate something on another website - comparison between how the ribbons for the BWM and VM actually look, and how they often appear in period photos:

David,

This is Captain A. Hoare, 12/KRRC Killed in Action 20 Nov 1917:

post-20192-1266011260.jpg

[facing p.327 1918 KRRC Chronicle]

He's interesting here because he was commisioned from the ranks, so has quite an unusual medal combination.

I'm not expert enough to identify each one confidently, so I'll give a summary of his service instead ...

1896 Enlisted as Rifleman into 2/KRRC

1900 MiD Battle of Wagon Hill, South African War

1909 Promoted CSgt

1913 Long Service & Good Conduct Medal

1914 (Aug) Promoted RSM

1914 BEF with 2/KRRC, Retreat from Mons, Battle of the Marne. Medaille Militaire.

1914 (Oct) Commissioned 2Lt KRRC (Btn unsure)

1915 (Aug) Lieutenant KRRC

1917 (Jan) Captain while with 4/KRRC in Salonika

1917 Repatriated after an accident, joining 12/KRRC on recovery

1917 (20 Nov) KiA at Cambrai

As an aside, when he was KiA, his Orderly, Rfn Albert SHEPHERD, took over command of the Company, rallied the men, then calmly walked back under heavy fire to summon support from a nearby tank. He'd already single-handedly stormed a machine gun earlier in the day. For all this he was awarded the VC.

Returning to Capt Hoare, that service would point to ...

  • QSA
  • possibly KSA - but no sign of the ribbon in the picture
  • slim possibility 1902 Coronation Medal
  • MiD oak leaf on the QSA/KSA
  • possibly 1911 Coronation Medal
  • LSGC
  • Medaille Militaire
  • 1914 Star & Clasp (picture probably predates start? of issue in Nov 1917)
  • BWM and VM (KiA before issue so cannot be in this picture)
So I'm guessing we have in the picture (L-R)

  • Medaille Militaire ???
  • LSGC - the white stripes seem clear
  • QSA + oak leaf
The colour bands in the Medaille Militaire (if it is that) and the QSA seem to almost disappear.

What do you think?

Incidentally this is a plate from the KRRC Chronicle not an RP postcard, so the photographic process issues may be different ??

I'll have to put the zoom-in of the ribbons in a separate Post as I've burst my attachment allowance for this one with the main picture.

Cheers,

Mark
