NigelS Posted 18 April , 2009 Share Posted 18 April , 2009 I recently came across this letter in a Service record on Ancestry: The fact that it mentions "All records of soldiers who became non-effective prior to August 1920 have been sent to Percy House Schools, Isleworth..." (not just those of the RE) and that the section is given as: "The War Office, Disposal of Records Section" might indicate that that location was used as a collection point and store for some - if not all - of what were later to become, at Arnside Street during WWII, the "Burnt" Series Soldiers' service records. It's very easy to imagine, if the records of the "Burnt" series were originally held at this location and had continued to be so during WWII (making the big assumption, of course, that the site managed to avoid getting bombed which, it appears from its history, might have been the case), that what became the "Burnt" series records might have remained as unburnt; If only .... David Porter Posted 5 September , 2009 Share Posted 5 September , 2009 I would tend to agree with you Nigel. Just found this in the Service Record of 205170 Gunner Thomas Kilroy. Thomas is requesting a duplicate discharge certificate in 1932. Another letter from his service record is addressed to War Office, Records Section, Arnside Street, Walworth, SE17, but this one is dated November 8, 1935. So we can pinpoint the move a little more accurately.
