HM Submarine K4 Memorial

Morning all

One of the lads on the Purton Memorial HE Martin, is also commemorated on the Memorial in St Margaret Patterns Church SE London for HM Submarine K4.

John Harrison at the Church is trying to get as much info on the lads named so he can put the details on a WEB page. If anyone can help it would be great, I can either pass on the details or you can e-mail me & I can give you a contact e-mail for John. I have posted this in both the naval & Memorial pages for the widest possible viewing for those who may be interested.

Hi Bob.

Don Kindell's list on Naval-History.net has 56 names for K.4 and I've just done a search of CWGC via Geoff's WW1 search engine, which is back online, and I got 55 (one must be hiding somewhere). Re the latter search, instead of searching on the name, I entered submarine in unit and the date which brings up other submarine casualties for that day (Geoff has improved the results list).

I did a quick search for an Admiralty notice on the K.4 in The Times but no joy - apart from the K.4, two other RN submarines were lost that day (E.50 and K.17) and there was one casualty on K.14 (from the info in Don's list and also confirmed by Geoff's search engine).

There does seem to be more than 56 names on that board, though it's a little difficult to read (some of the lines could be writing rather than names).

regards,

Martin

SEASIDER, cannot read the Memorial Tablet, but the following is the list of lost ;

After input by MARTIN these are the actual losses by boat - K4 = 55 K14 = 2 E50 = 31 K17 = 48. The confusion arises because on K14 L/S A SCOTT was on that boat, but one other, AB W J BOWELL was serving on K14, but transfered to K4 to replace a member of K4 (sick / indisposed ??). He was therefore commemorated as being on K4 (or K14 if looking different file).

Hope I have put this clearly ??

This from a SPECIFIC file at RNSM
