steve fuller Posted 23 April , 2005 Share Posted 23 April , 2005 Thank you very much Tom. Pte Kendall was born Kettering, but the info on him Ive come across so far is a bit "off" in some respects anyway, so no worries. And Lt Dawson is a bit of a conundrum so far! I dont think he was in the war for very long, bless him. Cheers Tom, lovely stuff!

andigger Posted 20 May , 2005 Share Posted 20 May , 2005 Thanks Tom.... all these men are listed as casualties of the local area from the Great War (Arlington Virginia). I am surprised there is no data for so many of them, Dave (Croonaert) had the same trouble. I am meeting with a local historian next week about a couple of the men, may be I can find out more, especially since they are not listed as war time casualties. museumtom Posted 2 June , 2005 Author Share Posted 2 June , 2005 From de Ruvigneys Roll of Honour (No picture); Haworth Philip Theodore, Capt. D Battery, 86th (Army) Brigade Royal Field Artillery, eldest s. of Alfred Haworth of Woodend Bowdon, B.A.J.D.. by his wife Dora Jeanne daughter of Alexander Muir born Dunham Massey Co. Chester, 25th of April 1897. Educated Wooton Court near Canterbury, Winchester College and was entered for New College, Oxford; Obtained a commission, 31st July, 1915. Served with the expeditionary force in France and Flanders from November 20th 1915. Took part in the great offensive on the Somme and Ancre; Was wounded at Gavrelle, 28th of April 1917 and died at the St. John ambulance brigade hospital. Etaples 3rd of May following. Buried in the military cemetary there. His commanding officer wrote; Although in this brigade we are fortunate in having very many fine officers, I always looked upon your son as the finest subaltern of them all. He was the calmest person in moments of stress that I have ever met and he was never at a loss and always did the right thing. He was immensely popular with everyone and the men admired him intensely. Besides his soldierly qualities, he was a delightful, cheery companion and a perfect gentlemen and a fellow officer;... a few months ago he came top of the whole divisional artillery in a searching examination conducted by the general himself. Personally I found him a very dear friend and I hourly miss both his comradeship and his guidance. In a crisis he was at his best and his men relied on him absolutely. His cheerful nature made him a universal favourite. An extract from "Brigade recommendation for honours" states "Has displayed great skill and gallantry throughout recent operations. For several days he was loaned to another brigade which was short of experienced officers. He practically commanded the battery and did all observation for us. On rejoining he continued to show great gallantry and energy, particularly during a difficult advance to the most forward position occupied by the sector. Enjoy. Tom. andigger Posted 9 June , 2005 Share Posted 9 June , 2005 I may have one of your men in the 29th Roll of honor:E.J. Smith Pvt. Battery A 110th Field Artillery Died of Disease or other cause May 26, 1918. The 110th FA was composed of D.C. National Guard Artillery units.<{POST_SNAPBACK}> Neil - this looks very close. My only questions would be, could 'other cause' be an accident? That is what is listed on the Database of Va Military dead, an accident. It also seems odd, though not improbably that he would have been in a DC National Guard unit since he was from VA. HOWEVER (and this just popped into my head as I was typing this) if he, or any of the others were their names would be listed on the monument on the National Mall. Guess where I am headed this weekend! Thanks very much though!! Andy
Neil Burns Posted 9 June , 2005 Share Posted 9 June , 2005 Hi Andy, Other cause could easily be accident. Interestingly the 110th did not have a single battle casualty so it's quite possible a training accident (in addition to the flu of course) coule have accounted for the handful of men on the Roll of Honor. I will check to see if there is any additonal information in the Division history. Take care, Neil
Paul Nixon Posted 9 June , 2005 Share Posted 9 June , 2005 Tom This might be a tall order, so feel free of course to throw it back at me. The following list of Great War fatalities all have Chailey (Sussex) connections. The main list is of men directly connected with the village (born there, lived there, worked there etc). The second, smaller list of five men are those unfortunate souls who were nursed at two hospitals there, were patched up, sent out again and killed. I'd be grateful if you could check these men against De Ruvigny's and I also seek Soldiers' Died references for those marked with an asterisk. Officers are in bold. Any help, would be much appreciated. Many thanks in advance. museumtom Posted 12 June , 2005 Author Share Posted 12 June , 2005 I looked through all the volumes of De Ruvigneys (there goes my weekend) and found only one hit and that was ford Frederick John Drummond. However the amount of guys on this memorial that had relations who also died in ww1 is amazing. This was obvious by the uniques type of names on it and the amount of guys from the Suffolk and Sussex area that also died but are not on the memorial. Anyway I digress here is the only hit for you; Drummond Frederick John, Trooper, east Africa Mounted Rifles (Bowkers Horse) eldest of major john William Ainslie Drummond of 27 Stanhope gardens London S.W, and Hollycombe, Englefield Green, late Scots Guars, a partner in Coutts’bank (E. of Perth coll, by his wife Florence Charlotte, dau of John George Blencoe of Bineham, Sussex; b Eastbourne co Sussex 15 June 1891; educ, Evelyn,s and Eton; settled in Est Africa; joined the East African Rifles on formation in aug 1914, after the outbreak of war, and was killed in action in the Longido Hills Nov 3 1914.
