museumtom Posted 4 July , 2005 Author Share Posted 4 July , 2005 Albert Edward lewis, 453215 Born St Marylebone, London, enlisted in London while living in Padington, KIA and it gives the location as E.E.F..perhaps a misspelling of the BEF or British Expeditionay Force. Albert Edward lewis, 301149, Born Spitalfields Middlesex, enlisted in, Stratford in Essex while living in Dalston in Middlesex. 'died' in palestine. There is an Albert Edward Lewis in De Ruvigneys but he was a navy man and was from cardiff, another Alfred Edward Lewis, also a Navy. Neither of you two Albert Edwrad lewiss's where in de Ruvigneys. regards. Tomman

ger_g Posted 11 July , 2005 Share Posted 11 July , 2005 Hi Tom. Thanks to you for offering your help to everyone. For me, I'm looking for HOW TO FIND a serviceman from World War 1. My ancestor William John Hamilton was born in Strabane in 1872-74, never moved as far as I know, filled out the census there in 1911, and (here's where it gets if-fy) died in the Great War, according to several sources. Some say he was killed and buried in France; others say in Salisbury Plain in 1917. Th cwgc has several William / William John Hamiltons whose deaths could fit either scenario. I haven't a clue about his military service. Where do I start? I should add I'm living a long way from my family and the internet is my best resource at the moment. Thanks in advance if you can help me or not - you are a champ Ger
museumtom Posted 11 July , 2005 Author Share Posted 11 July , 2005 I hate to second guess, I prefer just to list my findings. This is not possible as your search peramiters are so wide..........so.if I had to put down my opinion it would be; Pte William John Hamilton, Inland water Transport, Corps of the Royal Engineers, No 331144, rank; pioneer Died, at home, Born in Urney in Tyrone and enlisted in Strabane. Here are my reasons. He is the only William John hamilton who died in 1917 at home and he 'died' I have often seen 'at home' as being in England, out of the battle area, in Blighty. He was not KIA. The other reason is that Urney is in The barony of Strabane in Tyrone and he enlisted in Strabane also. Here is what the cwgc says; HAMILTON, WILLIAM JOHN Initials: W J Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Pioneer Regiment: Royal Engineers Date of Death: 25/12/1917 Service No: WR/327599 Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: Row 7, Grave 532. Cemetery: AMESBURY CEMETERY in Wiltshire. If you contact the Royal Engineers Museum they may be able to help you further. Regards. Tom
