Stebie9173 Posted 17 September , 2005 Share Posted 17 September , 2005 Entry for the 17-9-1918 in the 8th battalion War Diary: Tuesday 17th September 1918 France, EPINETIE WOOD Remained in present positions all day. A great number of gas shells fell in vicinity of Battalion HQ during the night. Doesn't really say much. He may have died of wounds received a few days earlier. The War Diaries of the Berkshires are often blank while the Battalions are out of the line, so picking up from the 15th: Sunday 15th September 1918 France, MONTAUBAN 10:15AM. Orders were received for the Battalion to relieve a unit of the 74th Division in the line on the night of 16th inst. Probable tour in line 7 days. Monday 16th September 1918 France, MONTAUBAN 8:20AM. Moved by bus to vicinity of NURLU and marched to EPINETIE WOOD where dinners and teas were served. EPINETIE WOOD. 5:30PM. Battalion moved to take over front line from units of 74th Division between F.19 d 0.4 and E.18 b 5.9 East of ST. EMILY. Battalion HQrs were located in Railway Bank at E.23 b 5.0. That doesn't add much either. So I would imagine he was either hit by sniper or artillery fire whilst in the trenches, or succumbed to the gas shells. You can look through the War Diary yourself at: http://www.thewardrobe.org.uk/wardiary.php3 Private Green doesn't seem to be mentioned individually, but not many "OTher Ranks" were... Steve. alison Posted 18 September , 2005 Author Share Posted 18 September , 2005 Wizzie Thanks for the census info, thats brilliant. It seems to fit with what I know. Would the address be Stone Close?.. as that would place them near to some other relatives, which would make sense now. Thanks again for your help. alison Posted 18 September , 2005 Author Share Posted 18 September , 2005 Steve Thanks for taking the time to reply. I have had a quick browse through the War Diary, and will have a better read tomorrow, as its late now. I will also have a search for his mic, and see if theres any other info to be gleaned. I may be back with more questions, if thats ok. Thanks again for your help. Alison

alison Posted 18 September , 2005 Author Share Posted 18 September , 2005 Wizzie Thanks, I see what you mean about the hand writing. The more I look at it, the less sure I am what it says. I think it was a case of wishful thinking, as another branch of the family were listed as living at Stone Close, and I jumped to conclusions. Thanks for your help. Steve Thanks for the link, I don`t get on with the mic search facility, so thats saved me some stress. I will post the mic here and see if anything else comes to light. Thanks again. alison Posted 18 September , 2005 Author Share Posted 18 September , 2005 Steve Here is the mic for Herbert. It doesn`t seen to say anything else, other than what we already know. Is it just me or does the zero look like a six? Maybe its just the handwriting, during that amount of transcriptions that were done. Thanks again, you have been really helpful. Thanks Alison
Stebie9173 Posted 18 September , 2005 Share Posted 18 September , 2005 It could be a 3 or a 6 but bearing in mind that CWGC states 43022, I think it is safe to say that it is a Zero. The only other thing this adds is that he went overseas after 1-1-1916 due to the lack of a 1914-15 Star. Steve.
Christina Posted 19 September , 2005 Share Posted 19 September , 2005 Having downloaded several census sheets myself, most with terrible writing, I would say it is Stone Close. I am on another site and will ask if there is an 1891 census sheet for them. You could be lucky they may be at the same address. Regards Christina
Stebie9173 Posted 19 September , 2005 Share Posted 19 September , 2005 The Greens are on the 1891 Census as "Grein". Alfred Thomas Green (Coalminer), Hannah Green, Florence Ada Green, and Alfred George. The handwriting is very close to the 1901 Census (If not the same man!), but I would say Stone Close... Sorry, can't post image from here. There is also a description on the Enumeration District. I'll try and post an image later. Steve.
alison Posted 19 September , 2005 Author Share Posted 19 September , 2005 Christina Thanks, that would be great if you could find them in the 1891 census. I have been going cross eyed looking at the street name from Wizzie, and am still not sure what it says. Thanks for taking the time to look. Also, a big thanks to everyone who has contibuted so far. Guest wrinklyone Posted 19 September , 2005 Share Posted 19 September , 2005 Alison If you haven't already, take a look at the series of four s/b books about the Kitchener battalions (5/6/&8 Bns). These were written by four devotees of the Royal Berks, all members of Thames Valley branch of the WFA. The fourth is called 'Their Duty Done' and covers actions in 1918. Threre's a sketch map and description of 8Bn action at Lempire on 18-24 September (a little late, I know). An easy read, and Appendix V lists all casualties, including Herbert John Green. Guest wrinklyone Posted 19 September , 2005 Share Posted 19 September , 2005 the book in question is avalaible from the Regimental Museum at www.thewardrobe.org.uk <{POST_SNAPBACK}> And I see that our very own Tom Morgan now has this fourth book (but not, apparently, the three books covering the earlier years) on offer at a ridiculously low price. alison Posted 20 September , 2005 Author Share Posted 20 September , 2005 Hello Everyone Sorry for the delay in replying, sadly a little thing called `work` kept me from my computer. alison Posted 20 September , 2005 Author Share Posted 20 September , 2005 Christina Thank for the details, every little helps, and I now know to check various spellings of Green, when searching for other details. I have now mailed Tom Morgans bookshop, regarding the books ( 2 of them are listed for sale), so its just a case of waiting to see if they are still available.
