Anyone know if Taffy's 14 Star is still around?

I would check with the Regimental Head Quarters if the Guards can have a stuffed Duck who knows where poor Taffy is I am sure his medal will be in a cabinet as the Regiment would have claimed it.

Cheers,

Rob

Am I misreading this, or is the goat's name Taffy the IV, suggesting this regiment had a tradition of having regimental goats?

Best wishes,

Michael

Taffy IV's date of entry indicates that Taffy I, II and III must have been pre-war regulars who retired to pension prior to the outbreak of war - perhaps there are service records in WO97?

Here is another curious one - you may have seen the thread about Sapper Dorothy Lawrence. She was not eligible, the card refers to Army Medal Office correspondence which is now destroyed. Dorothy probably wrote claiming her medals, to which she was not entitled.

Saw entry about Sapper lawrence:

1) Were medals claimed 1914-1915 Star/Great War/etc trio?

2) If she had a discharge other than dishonorable -why was she denined medals?

Was there a spefic Army Regulation that forbaded women in a compaign from

receiveing Decorations?

PFF

Take a look at this thread.

She was never actually enlisted as she made her own way to the front and persuaded a Sapper in a Tunnelling Company to conceal her in Albert. It is not known what medals she claimed but she was in France June to September 1915. She was never entitled to any medals as she evaded security to get to the front as an unauthorised freelance journalist. Women got medals if they were enlisted with one of the recognised services.

The Essex had a dog called "Jack" at the time, I believe.

This is presumably another Jack, unless the Essex nicked him, from 10th Corps Routine Orders, 4 November 1915 (in WO95/855).

If you search on 'mascot' in the MICs you also get these two. I assume they are boys, especially the bugler, and did not go overseas. Like Dorothy Lawrence's, the cards just contain references to correspondence rather than to actual rolls.

Another one, I think. Saw it in passing in a 1915 paper earlier today. Noted the Essex, but moved along. You can't aford to get that sidetracked!

I'm gonna have to double check now! :D

Steve.

Back to the goat - if you get the Nat Archives newsletter you can win a competition by saying that he was awarded the 1914 Star whoops I've given away the answer.
