In memory of Frederick Marginson Collinson whose death from wounds is recorded by the CWGC as 100 years ago today. Fred was mortally wounded on 7th May 1915 two days after arriving at Cape Helles in Gallipoli, in an attack between the coast and Gully Ravine. He was 41 years old and left a widow and a teenage son and daughter back in Bury. Fred had joined the Lancashire Fusilers in Bury in April 1889 at 15, although he gave his age as 18 years and one month. He was a talented footballer who began his career at Everton around 1892 before being transferred to Bury for £10, scoring against Small Heath - now Birmingham City - on his debut. He served with the 2nd LF in the 2nd Boer War and may have been present at the battle of Spion Kop and the relief of Ladysmith.

His body was lost and his name is on the Helles Memorial.

Not forgotten.

Pete.

As I mentioned to Pete last week, we know the circumstances of Collinson's fatal wounding as it is described by his platoon commander George Horridge in an IWM interview quoted in Hart and Steele's 'Defeat at Gallipoli'.
