Remembered Today:

Russians in the CEF

Broznitsky

Recommended Posts

A request for Pals:

When you are doing your researches, if you encounter by chance any Russians (also known as Ukrainians, Ruthenians, Galicians, Bukovinians, Bessarabians, Moldavians, Poles, Austrians, Roumanians, etc) who enlisted into the CEF, please PM or email me, or leave a reply here with the man's name and/or number.

Kudos to Pal James Hill from Edmonton who provided me with a lengthy list of Russians from Alberta battalions.

These men may have anglicized their names but they were usually honest about their birthplace.

Thanks in advance,

Peter in Vancouver

Hi Peter,

I just tried to link a series of searches from the Archives and failed miserably. Essentially I just searched SZ$, ZH$, ZI$ etc. which gives you a nice run of Eastern European-type names.

Just out of curiosity, have you ever encountered Ukrainian-Canadians returning to defend the Ukraine post-1918?

Take care,

Neil

Peter

I read your other post on medals first and replyed to that also. I will go through my shipping list for the Nova Scotia men and make a list for you. It will take a while but you will have one I have most of the list published for the Province.

Best Regards

N.S.Regt.

Peter,

I am working on an outfit you may find interesting. It was known as the Ruthenian Forrestry Draft and recruited hereabouts from March, 1917. There are only a few score names, but it will take me a few days or a week to finish transcibing them.

By this this stage of the war, a more realistic attitude seems to have developed toward these "aliens". No longer are they "Russians" ( unless they really were born in Russia!). Their places of birth come right out and say "Galicia, Austria" in most cases. At least one so far proudly noted previous military service with the Austrian army! In addition the recruiting clerks had started to sort out the differences among the various religions involved.

Incidently, several of these men had previously joined the militia (101st Edmonton Fusiliers), possibly waiting for the military to decide they were acceptable to the C.E.F.

Peter, these are all men from the 227th Battalion, "The Men from the North", Northern Ontario. There could be at least thirty more names but I can't be sure since their papers aren't on-line yet. When I have some time, I'll look through the 141st as they had a number of Russian men as well.

Neil, I am using the $ in my attestation searches. It does work wonders, although it is not 100% accurate. As to word of Ukes going back, no I haven't. There likely would have been a few, but I can't see numbers in the hundreds. Good research question.

James, I think these fellows went over with the 258th Battalion out of Montréal.

Chris, FANTASTIC, just what I want. Do you know Pal Bill Alexander is a North Bay expert?

N.S.Regt, ditto FANTASTIC. The east coast is an overlooked area; this just proves that some Russians stopped there when they immigrated.

With all these new names, I am approaching the 4,000 mark. The real challenge will be finding the "John Marshall" and "Fred Bostwick" types who were born in Russia.

Thanks so much, Pals. :D:D

Peter, I had no idea it is an area of interest for Bill.

My interest in the 227th and 141st came about while doing some research a couple of months ago. I had stumbled across the excellent on-line "Historical Archive of the Native Veterans of Northwestern Ontario" and decided to research the Roll of Honour they had posted. While doing so I found there were some names in both battalions which I at first thought were Aboriginal but were actually Eastern European.

Is there one particular area which stands out the most for enrollment of Eastern European men?

Chris, I have not analyzed province of enlistment yet, but just from researching I think it will be Manitoba and Alberta, as these places saw the largest settlement.

Marika, that is very interesting. It is rare to see a Russian man become an officer. He lists his religion as C of E. Thanks.

Hi Peter

I've looked through Harry Abbinks book, "The Military Medal Canadian Recipients 1916-1922", and Jim Wallaces book, "Canadian Foreign Awards, Awards to Nursing Service, Mentioned in Despatches World War I (1914-1919)". I've only looked for eastern sounding names. So I may have missed some. I've checked with the attestation papers to see if they were born in the country stated. I use the attestation papers in my research a great deal to confirm the names of the parents, next of kin and place of birth. All the best in your research.

Chris. and N.S.Regt, I’ve checked your lists against H. Abbinks MM. book and found no recipients of the MM.

Updating: besides CEF attestation papers, the embarkation nominal roll has also proved fruitful. If anybody possesses any sailing rolls, the next time you pull them out to research, please look for Russia as the place of birth and advise me.

Bill, does it list place of birth?

Unfortunately no.

It lists the 60,000 men and women of the CEF who were killed or died of wounds or sickness. It is organized:-- Regimental number, rank, surname, given names, unit (at time of death), year, buried (cemetery), notes.

You might be able to make a list of possibles from the name only, and then check the attestation form on the National Archives site.

Hi Peter

There was a book recently released in Australia called 'Russian Anzacs' which may be of interest to you even though it focuses on the Russian experience in the AIF.

I've just started reading it and it's quite interesting.

One soldier was quoted as saying that when leaving Russia he couldn't decide between going to Australia or Canada. So it was 'Heads Australia or Tails Canada'.

Stone the crows, Andrew. Thanks for that link. I would be interested in hearing your final review of the book. Googling reveals that the author found evidence of about 1,000 Russian Anzacs. I'm up to about 4,000 in the CEF. I guess geographic proximity would explain that.

Is there a cheap online source for Australian books?

Hi Peter

Abe books is the one I normally use. Though It was about $45 through the publisher. What's the Canadian exchange rate compared to the Australian?

The author says she's found about 1000 Russian Anzacs, 'enough for their own battalion'. It seems the Russian Consul in Australia was an active recruiter of these men for the AIF.

Very interesting so far.

Cheers

Andrew
