Hello

I think that the lettering of the District Record Offices is a WW2 practice. In WW1 they were numbered. I have annotated your list as follows:

A-Cork .No 12 District

B-Dublin.No 11 District.

C-Exeter..No 8 District

D-Hamilton..No 2 District

E-Hounslow..No 10 District

F-Lichfield..No 6 District

G-Perth..No 1 District

H-Preston..No 3 District

J-Shrewsbury..No 4 District

K-Warley..No 9 District

L-Warwick..No 7 District

M-Winchester..Rifle Depot

O-York..No 5 District

Hi Ron,

Re 'lettering of the District Record Offices is a WW2 practice' - just to say that the lettering was used for the WW1 medal roll codes, given on the MICs e.g. D104/B12 etc. was issued from the Hamilton Record Office.

Cheers,

Stuart

Hopefully we can keep adding to it and then keep it as a sticky. If one of the moderators is reading this can we get it moved to: Documents, photos, art."Interpreting service records and medal index cards "

Cheers for any help

Very useful for determining which regiments were associated with a particular Infantry Record Office. I was particularly interested in Shrewsbury.

K-Warley.

Bedford Regt.16

The Monthly Army Lists show the Regiments in Regimental District order - here's the header from the January 1919 edition. The Bedfordshire Regiment had previously been the 16th Regiment of Foot.

Aah great thank you. I was muddled with the 16 - wasn’t sure if that related to the district or 16th of foot - thank you for clarifying

Strictly speaking the 16th Regimental District should be the county of Bedfordshire at a minimum, as that is where the Bedfordshire Regiment is aligned to, and so would also tie in with the County of Bedfordshire Territorial Force Association. The grey area may be Hertfordshire. The Hertfordshire Regiment was Territorial Force only, and so to align in with the national command structure it had links into the Bedfordshire Regiment. The January 1919 entry for the Hertfordshire regiment doesn't show it which Regimental District it came under. https://digital.nls.uk/british-military-lists/archive/123225480

The Hertfordshire County Territoral Force Association was a separate organisation. https://digital.nls.uk/british-military-lists/archive/123233712

Peter
