I have tried to find appropriate maps to follow their route during the battle.

Contemporary newspaper reports of the Battle of the Piave (both from British and Austrian sources) and the 1/8th Worcestershire war diary identifies several locations: Perghele, Canove, Carriola, Ambrosini, the Lemerle Switch and Cesuna Switch/church. Most show Valdagno, Shio and Asiago which are on the probable route the 1/8th took in their deployment from their reserve location on 16th June but I would like to follow their specific route through this misty mountainous terrain.

I found this forum when looking for information about my great grandparents who fought on the Italian front in WW1

one in particular his unit was disbanded after great losses so I am hypothesising that he may have been a POW

any idea if there exists lists of Italian POWs??

	Hello,

I'm just curious about something. One of the soldiers I am researching was sent home to Australia from France for 'furlough' (he was in the 12th Battalion AIF). The exact date of his leaving France was not recorded, however it was recorded in his service notes that he left Taranto Italy on the Kaiser-I-Hind on the 24th of September 1918. He seems to have been transferred to the Devon, leaving Suez on the 13th of October and was able to disembark at Australia in November of 1918. I'm just curious about this method to bring him home. All of the soldiers I am researching left France for England first, and then home to Australia from there. Why would he have been sent to Italy, then Suez, and then finally to Australia? Does anyone know?

	Thanks,
Tam

Would anyone be able to provide me with information regarding the 315th siege battery's activity on the Italian front, specifically I would like to know their activity around August of 1917 due to a relative of mine fighting and dying with them on the 23rd of that month but any information around the 315th would be much appreciated. I believe the 315th was attached to the 94th heavy artillery group

	Hello,
I am studying a British report concerning a raid carried out in Italy in 1918.
In the description occasional topographical references appear I think, perhaps coordinates?

I know that the British on their 1:10,000 maps used the Lambert grid but I still don't understand the geographical significance of these references.

I will transcribe an example: ”.....runnuing from about H.356.513 to H.339.484......”

Can you indicate how these numbers should be read?

	Grazie

	Hello,
Does anyone have information regarding the organization of the supply trains of the Habsburg forces during the last half of the war? By supply trains, I specifically mean the mostly horse-drawn wagons used to move supplies from the railheads to the front. I'm putting this in the Italy category as I am particularly interested in the organization of Austro-Hungarian forces on this front. So far I've found that their German allies, at least, used a standard column of 48 horse-drawn wagons, and that these services were organized at the army level. The Austro-Hungarian Official History, however, seems to be lacking a detailed explanation of how their horse-drawn supply trains were organized. Any information on this matter would be appreciated.

It has been long thought in the family that my grandfather, who was in the Royal Engineers, was at the second battle of the Piave River. However his medal card does not include any campaign medals from this action. His service record is unobtainable.

Grateful if anyone has information about RE’s at the battle and would he have been awarded a campaign medal if he had been there?
thanks

I am looking for info on 24CCS in Italy in 1918, and more specifically any details on locations, and staffing. An Australian nurse was the sister in charge - Sister Lily Mackenzie - so anything mentioning her would be terrific.

many thanks

I understand that officers assigned to cavalry units attended training at Cavalry Application School at Pinerolo. Was there formal training for enlisted men as well? I have seen some reference to volunteers receiving training at the Cavalry Application School but I have been unable to find anything deeper on this. Does anyone know anything about the training enlisted men received? Did they get assigned to infantry units and then volunteer for cavalry, or was this determined upon conscription?

This may be for a separate post (I apologize in advance), but without flooding the forum with multiple posts, does anyone know if there is a way to locate where a particular soldier may be buried? My great granduncle succumbed to wounds while in the 14th health section on 15 June 1916 after suffering wounds sustained in combat. He was with the 26th Lancieri di Vercelli regiment. I was able to determine the 14th Health Section was located in Marcorina until the 15th of June and then moved to Monfalcone. Is this just a coincidence that he died on the date of movement?

Currently researching Spr Walter Heap 438367 1/3 Durham Fd Coy (528) remembered at Giavera Cemetery. Is there any information regarding the unit's movement during the Italy campaign? Many thanks.

I visited Rome last week and visited the Vatican Museums. Exhibited there is an WW1 Italian Army’s Field Altar which saw service on the Italian Front. It was given to the Pope Francis by the Italian Army when a Mass celebrated in Redipuglia Military Cemetery in September 2014, as part of the centenary commemorations. Among the gifts he received was the discharge certificate given to his paternal grandfather, Giovanni Carlo Begolio, a radio-telegraph operator and rifleman, who fought on the Isonzo River. The Pope recalled, ‘I heard many painful stories from the lips of my grandfather … and once the war was over, with the Italian economy in difficulty, he decided to emigrate to Argentina.'

Apologies for the quality of the photos - the exhibit was behind glass.

If you want to know more about this front of the Great War, then the latest addition to Mat Dixon's podcast 'Footsteps of the Fallen' is a talk between Matt and Tom Isitt on the Italian Front. I highly recommend it.

I found my self shocked while reading a passage describing how the 'Battle Police' were pulling officers out of a retreating mass of soldiers (departing from the disaster of the Battle of Caporetto) and executing them for abandoning their men amongst other reasons.

Is there any expert on the Italian Front during WWI who could comment whether this reflects what actually happened, or was Hemingway deviating from what had actually happened for the sake of his novel?

I just registered on this forum.

I’m Italian and I’m doing a research about the British Army intervention in Italy during 1917-1918.

I'd be interested to maps of the trenches, in particular indicating barracks, reserve and artillery positions in the area of the Asiago plateau.

If you have any one, I would be very pleased to see it, or just have a copy of that!

So I can find the places and I can map this with GPS.

Can anyone help me?

The fighting there was as intense and bloody as anything in that war, and the conditions were appalling.

I know little about it. The names Isonzo, Asiago, Carso, Trentino, Piave come to mind, and images of snow, ice, mountains, mud, avalanches etc.

Forgive me if I'm wrong...maybe you folks have already discussed this theatre of the war, and feel that there's not much more to be said.

I would like to learn more about it. Any suggestions/recommendations?

	Greetings!

I'm a writer looking to get published in the future and I have a few questions regarding this specific topic. I'm writing a historical fiction set during the Great War but I'm currently only doing research for now.

	1. In the Italian front of the war, did military chaplains stay with the army or were they assigned to other positions outside of giving last rites and final absolution?

	2. Were there mercy dogs in the Dolomites?

	3. What did Catholic military chaplains look like? Are there photos of them in uniform while in the front lines in the Dolomites?

These are the only questions I can think of for now, I might add more later. Also, sorry for posting these here. I don't know where else to ask them as I've scoured the internet for the answers to them, but they have been insufficient.
