Examination Paper

Set by Sergt. Tom Roberts for those desirous of stripes and promotion (Irish)

Sec. 1.

Time allowed: half-day leave

I. Describe a method of directing an enquiring stranger from Main Hall to D4 Ward (not D Ward). All signs of direction, if any (or none), may be availed of. Answer not to contain more than 125 words. Extra marks will be given to a lucid explanation of the system (also if any) on which B Block wards are reached before A Block ones.

II. For orderlies in officers’ wards.

Each candidate to take a taxi to wards N to Y on a dark night, and the taxi to turn without striking tree-stumps. Five trials allowed, and one success to count as “pass.” Any profanity allowed on these adventures. Also explain any sequence in the letters of these wards, N to Z.

III. For ward orderlies (miscalled).

Explain a good method of breaking up firewood (when no choppers are allowed or provided in any ward) – whether by foot, flat-iron, cook’s chopper, or table knife. Also how to light four coke fires with one bundle of wood (without Ronuk).

IV. For boy and slave orderlies.

(1.) Show how sixty plates and twenty glasses may be decently wiped, after washing, with four small, damp teacloths. Produce six plates and one glass so treated. Two marks off for every smear. N.B. No help may (or will) on any account be given, in this operation, by a V.A.D. or other female, this being particularly a male occupation.

(2.) And give plausible (or hospital) reasons why, while hot water is in any kitchen, the plates etc., should not be drained in racks.

V. Fifty marks will be allowed for a suggested plan for a clean and definite way from the Sergeant-Major’s office in Hut 2 to the Main Hall without pitfalls, slush, barrows, or drains. Any fancy suggestions, such as an asphalt path with spruce rails, will not be allowed.

The directions to the various wards answers might come in handy in my new school!
