Did not have to go far for this tour - Hartlepool.
On December 16th 1914, three German warships attacked towns on the East Coat of England, including Hartlepool. The attack lasted from 8:10am to 8:50 am killing more than 100 people and injuring many more. One interesting aspect of the engagement of the German Battle cruisers by the Durham RGA was those who took part qualified for the British War Medal and Victory medal. Many went on to serve overseas any how, however, both Gunner Spence and Houston (the 2 Durham RGA men killed) qualified for their medals.
