About this blog

Whilst my initial focus on WW1 research was the trench railways, my interests also cover family histories of people who served and the associated social context. Hence this blog will include some railway and modelling topics, plus other WW1 topics that become of interest.

WW1 Railway Modelling 4 – Inspiration from other model layouts

Existing (and past) model layouts can be inspirational and informative for new modellers. This article lists some of the excellent work done by modellers already interested in the train systems of WW1. Hopefully people will note in the comments at the end of the article any additional reference sources that have been overlooked (please stick to the topic – other scale model layouts of WW1 railways). WW1 Railway Modelling 3 – Locations of reference prototypes

PROTOTYPES (i.e. the original 12-inches-to-the-foot scale items) Further to the previous articles in this short series which listed reference books and multimedia, this article adds a list of locations where original prototype Great War military railway and tramway equipment can be seen –  surely the most useful reference material for a modeller. There are undoubtedly many other ex-WW1 service trains that are not listed here, so this is not claimed to be an exhaustive roster. For examp

WW1 Railway Modelling 2 – Multimedia Reference Materials

MULTIMEDIA RESOURCES Further to the first article in this short series which listed reference books, this article adds a list of other types of reference materials including videos, maps, web sites and groups/societies. This is not claimed to be an exhaustive list as there are simply too many web sites out there to list here - a good search engine is advised. Hopefully people will note in the comments at the end of the article any additional reference sources that have been overlooked

WW1 Railway Modelling 1 – Reference Books

For anyone interested in scale modelling of railways and tramways from the Great War, there are some marvellous sources of research and information to help with accurate depictions of the equipment, locations and methods employed by the troops and engineers. Whilst materials are being added to internet databases all the time, the focus brought by well researched books and the physical experience of encountering an original locomotive or track mean it is good to break away from on-line sources on
